This site is intended to provide information on the European Directive and regulations that apply in Europe for industrial products. The Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC that came into force December 29, 2009 and replaced Directive Machines 1998/37/CE.

The text of the new requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC is identified in red color compared with requirements of machinery directive 1998/37/EC and provides comment on particular points.

To integrate the knowledge already acquired by some manufacturers on the Machinery Directive 1998/37/CE, this site for each item and each requirement of the machine directive 2006/42/EC:

  • Highlights, directly in the text in different colors, and for each requirement of the Machinery Directive, the changes between the requirements of the Machinery Directive 1998/37/CE and Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
  • Provides when necessary comments on the different requirements of the Machinery Directive from several guides, published or in the process of been published mainly from the European Commission or other regulation agencies of European Commissions or notified bodies, standardization and other official documents such as the application guide of the machine directive.
  • Indicates interpretations, rules, harmonized standards which helps to demonstrate the conformity of the products to the requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
  • On one hand allows machine builders to have the information needed to determine whether their machines are always in conformity with the regulations, and on the other hand allows users of these machines if the machine they buy conforms the European legal requirements.

Each requirement of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC will be detailed to inform mainly OEMs, partly completed machinery, safety components, the new requirements of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC manufacturers must integrate into their products and new information that they must provide to users of their machines.

In these comments will be mainly presented:

  1. Procedures that are applicable in the product certification
  2. Depending on the product, the differents case of certification : voluntary certification or regulatory certification
  3. If regulatory certification, what are the notified bodies ?
  4. What are the harmonized standards, and what are the texts giving presumption of conformity with the essential health and safety requirements of the Machinery Directive?
  5. What are the documents that must be put with the machines and safety components, what are the new requirements of the new Machinery Directive on the perspective of : marking, instructions, trade notices
